The Atlantic Highway’s immediate predecessor was established in 1911 as the Quebec-Miami International Highway. It was renamed the Atlantic Highway in 1915, and the northern terminus was changed to Calais ME. Many early highways took advantage of existing auto trails, some of which remain in use today. The Atlantic Highway used the Boston Post Road, Lincoln Highway, and Baltimore Pike in the northeastern states. The Dixie Highway was used through Georgia and Florida.
